Imminent change to ShadowMusic

Postby Admin » Mon Mar 11, 2019 7:38 am

Many of you will be aware that ShadowMusic has been quite heavily customised from the standard phpbb message board at the request of the members right from the start.

However, it has become increasingly expensive to maintain these modifications and I regret that they will have to go since there have been no donations for over a year and the usage of the site is now fairly low.

The site will, therefore, be down for much of Saturday 23rd March 2019 after which it will become the default phpbb site.

No posts or replies will be lost during this transition.

Thanks,

Bob

What sort of cash do you need in order to maintain it as it is?

More than happy to help, Bob. May we talk it over?

There does appear to be a problem but we don't yet know the extent of it. It seems that the cost and technology associated with running this site are both factors. Meanwhile - and this may not be widely known - the site is maintained technically at no cost to members, and yet it is labour intensive and an often thankless task. Maybe a rethink is needed? Bob's solution of stripping down the site to basics may well be the right thing to do but we don't know what that will look like.

My question is twofold: what do members want and to what extent are members willing and able to help?

All thoughts welcome.

Best wishes - Iain

It would be a shame to lose this. I know it has competition from Facebook and other social media and that our Shadows music community is forever getting smaller, but it's a useful and valuable resource and unique in that it's devoted to one particular band.

Perhaps it would help if all users (3974 according to the site stats!) made a small donation.

There's a "DONATE" button at the top of the page.

However, Bob does say in the DONATE section that the matter should not be discussed in open forum, so I would rather we addressed the more open questions here, namely what you want of the site and how you could help it.

I've spoken to Bob, understand the situation and I am happy that all is in hand. Worry not...

As I have to work all day today nothing is going to happen for a while. I will keep the membership informed when the site is likely to be interrupted in the future.

Bob.
