Cobra Colour Conundrum - solved!

Some of you may remember my posting on here back in 2012 under the title, "Cobra Colour Conundrum," about the possibility of obtaining a Burns Cobra in Guards Red with tortoiseshell scratchplates – a colour combination Burns themselves don’t do.

Well, last year I bought a Guards Red one, with the intention of using the pickups in my Brian May Strat. Then I found that the pickups already fitted to it were pretty good, so I never bothered. Then last month I found another Cobra for sale at a good price in Shadows White, so I bought it, then swapped the scratchplates and backplates between the two guitars and here is the result which I hope you like.





I think it looks really excellent, reminiscent somewhat of Jet's/Licorice’s Precision Bass. By the way, if any of you are coveting it, I’m afraid it’s been sold. I still have the white one; that’s about to be resprayed in French Racing Blue.

I have a a Brian May Strat and have put the same electronics with toggle switches into a Buns Vibra Artiste which I have sprayed black - much better switching than the original - it looks good too. Black white pickguard with small white black plate. Do you spray your own or send them out. I tend to spray my single colour but transparent and blends in N/C I am not skilled enough yet. Yours sound really interesting. I always have trouble posting pics

I spray my own, but my spray booth isn't big enough to get a guitar in as it was only designed for model work. So I hang my guitar bodies in the garage for painting, after first moving the car out of course, and chucking a load of water all over the floor to lay the dust. It seems to work fine.

Here's a Squier Tele which I resprayed in an aged metallic purple; I also aged the neck by spraying it with clear acrylic which had previously had a slight touch of dark brown added to it.

I've realised that my sentence "swapped the scratchplates and backplates between the two guitars" makes it look really simple. Unfortunately hardly any of the screwholes actually lined up so had to be filled and redrilled. This is par for the course with guitars. Even genuine Fender Strat scratchplates usually need this treatment; I've only had two in my entire life that didn't!

Those tortoiseshell pickguards look fantastic. They'd be a tiny bit nearer to perfection against a Fender-style three-colour sunburst.
