I had a white one in 1962 for about a year....replaced it with an Epiphone Casino...Kalamazoo made in those days....the Burns was a great guitar with some quite unusual tones....I never did figure out the controls though....
Yes the Artiste controls were rather cluttered I think Jim was trying to be the be all end all of all guitars with this model. The Artiste de Luxe was a much better layout offering more tone options and Brian May set up his guitar offering similar selections. I wonder why Jim went from the de luxe switching to the less versatile Split Sound system then on to Strat type switching. Picture shows switching for de luxe for anyone not familiar
