Nu-Sonic Bass review

Postby RayL » 10 Jan 2015, 08:42

Guitar & Bass (new issue dated February 2015) has a review of the short-scale Nu-Sonic Bass, a re-issue of the short-lived 1964 model. At 30" it is certainly short-scale and it follows the original design to the extent, for example, of having a single chromed steel saddle, rather than an individual saddle for each string.

It gets a good review.

I've never played one of these. I wonder, with both pickups, how close it could get to the Rostill trademark 'donk'.

From the review:-
The twin-pickup sound is agreeable, with the flatwound strings producing a pleasing combination of throaty growl and soft thud.

Price quoted is (gulp) £799 inc hard case.

Pretty much what Barry charged for the Shads Bass replica. I bought one. Its a great gigging instrument. Weighs a ton though!

£799 for a model made in China ! Not saying China can't make guitars but this is expensive. As the article states there are a lot of other short scale basses around. Personally I don't think it will be one of the big sellers of the year.

Are all Burns guitars manufactured in China now. Do Burns do anything to them when they arrive in UK. I am not implying that Chinese quality is less than UK but wonder how costs can be justified between cheaper and more expensive models. Or is it a case of Burns being able to cream of more profit from those who crave a more expensive instrument.
I remember a Blues group the Producers and the lead guitarist found an old acoustic in a Skip and used it all the time for slide and it sounded fantastic. My point being that most of the time it is the player and not necessarily the instrument

I have never tried one these Nu - sonic basses but have tried the Marquee Bass and The Rostill /Shads bass
The Marquee And Rostill basses are completely different. Its like comparing The marquee guitar to The burns Marvins.
the Marquee Doesnt get anywhere near The Rostill bass in regards
Sound,tone or playability.
i would imagine looking at the construction and shorter scale lenght of the Nu sonic it would be closer sounding to
The marquee Bass .

Regards

In the picture above, I'm playing 'Big' Rick Fitz-Patrick's Nu-Sonic.
The sound is nothing like the Rostill Bass that I've also played.
