They were certainly not particularly cheap back then, and compared to other similar good or reasonable standard gear around at that time- Fenders, Hofners etc- they were certainly up in those price ranges. A Bison was priced well into Fender territory and the cheaper models were somewhat above the prices of say, the better quality Hofner solids (V3, Galaxy etc)
Interesting that the 6 string bass had a regular guitar scale length (in this case 24 3/4 inches like a Gibson, and not even the standard typical Fender scale of 25 1/2 inches) let alone the 30 inch Fender Bass VI scale length...I suspect a few chaps back then who joined bands (sorry! groups!) but were relegated to play bass because of a surfeit of guitarists, might have bought a set of Burns 6 string bass strings and forced them to fit their regular electric guitars to get by..?
