Thunderbirds film bass??

Postby glyn012003 » Sat May 21, 2022 8:37 pm

No idea on the provenance of this - but an interesting ebay listing I just spotted...
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185401832018 ... SwoWxiaF6f
"Vintage Burns Mini Shadows Marvin Jazz Bass 1966 Thunderbirds"
Would be a nice piece of memorabilia to own - although clearly not a finished piece, but I guess could be a prototype?? Maybe???

How strange. No tuners!

The same vendor is also selling what appears to be a full size 1966 Baldwin bass guitar, natural wood and condition “used”. Same asking price as for the Thunderbirds model!

Yes, I noticed that same price point Iain :-)
It was the fact of the other vintage Burns listings from the vendor - including the bass you mention - that made me think this could be what it looks like?
I have asked the vendor a bit more about it out of interest, e.g. was it perhaps a prototype of the one(s) used in the movie...

I am puzzled by the model headstock which is the flattened Baldwin style. The lack of provenance would also make me wary.

For the record, I have a miniature Marvin guitar which I bought years ago for £25!
And a Bison bass.

Somebody is deluded or having a laugh.
It's well known that John Rostill didn't really like his Burns Bass as he played his white Fender Jazz Bass at every possible opportunity.

Some words from the vendor...

"it is clear that this was made by the Burns Factory for the Thunderbirds Movie of 1966. It is a miniature of the real thing using the same woods and paintwork and finish as the full size ones. I assume it was one of few made by Burns, which were then sent on to the Thunderbirds prop builders to finish the guitars miniature adornments, tuners frets knobs etc This was from a house clearance , so I imagine it was either kept so well by a Burns employee or a member of the Thunderbirds crew."

So circumstantially possible - the finish does indeed look right for age - but not planning to bid without a bit more knowledge ;)
