Jet Harris Legend signature

Postby balston11 » Sat Aug 27, 2022 12:11 pm

A member of a famous 60s group has sent me some photos of this guitar asking me for more information. I haven't been able to tell him much. Other than it is typical of Burns to suddenly make random models like this. So does anybody know anything about it. Here is an extract from his email
It is a 1995 The Legend series Jet Harris signature model in fiesta red, birdseye maple neck and gold hardware, (s/n 003).

I remember the Legend coming out but all these that I saw back in the early 90s all had Hank’s signature and not Jet’s, and why would they. Jet had left the Shadows by this point. Also, I saw the other Jet Harris prototype on Trevor’s website which is completely different to the below model.

I have attached some images for your perusal and hopefully you could shed some light on this guitar. I also have the certificate of authenticity signed by Barry Gibson etc.

The guitar is in excellent condition with some of the best birdseye detail that I have seen.

For some reason I am strugglng to upload the pictures but you can see them here

Any thoughts much appreciated

The Legend was the precursor to the reissued Marvin, because at that time Burns did not have an agreement with Hank to call the guitar 'Marvin'. I have never seen a red Legend, but there are certainly variants around - a friend has a white Legend but with a maple fingerboard.

That said, I do not recall Jet playing a red Legend, as when he was sponsored by Burns, he played a silver grey Legend. His Barracuda 6-string bass was 'Guards Red', though...

Also, the signature on the the standard Legend was Jim Burns, not Hank, for the reason noted above.

I have a red Legend "Custom Deluxe" with gold hardware and figured maple fret board - much the same as the instrument referred to in the OP. The signature of the Rezotube is "Jim Burns" though, just as you mentioned.

I am not saying that Jet never played a Legend - I simply wouldn’t know - but AFAIK he is not associated with that model.

Barry supplied Jet with a Legend, Shadows Bass and Barracuda for a period of time, though Jet did eventually go back to Fenders.

I nearly bought this guitar, but I was assuming that it was a 'labour of love', like the way people buy Gretsch's and then Duane Eddy/Eddie Cochranify them.

In the event the seller wanted cash on collection and my local bank's branch has closed, in fact there wasn't a branch within 40 miles so I offered the seller several other payment methods, to be honest I wasn't too happy about driving halfway across the country carrying that kind of dosh, but he insisted on COC. This made me a little suspicious but I started withdrawing £250 a day from various holes-in-the-wall (That's the most I'm allowed to withdraw}. I'd reached £750 when Ebay informed me that the seller had cancelled me as a non-paying-bidder...

Am I to understand that most of you think it's genuine?

Unless I am very much mistaken there certainly was at least one red Burns Legend - Barry Gibson had one! My own Legend(s) were green burst which I loved - I had the "Marvin" Legend, and matching Double 6 (with Rezo whammy unit) and Barracuda - all long since sold off. To me, the standard white / tortoiseshell and Greenburst models both looked great but the red, which looks so great on a Strat, never appealed to me on the Marvin - just personal taste, I guess!

Here's mine, made in '96 (or possibly '97, can't remember off hand):
