Or perhaps lighter than that?

A guitar with a floating bridge (the ES-295 is essentially just a cosmetic variant of the ES-175) needs heavier strings in order to properly anchor the bridge base, tension the neck and stress the guitar body, plus, in the specific case of the ES-295, make the Bigsby operate within its proper tension range..

I would not recommend anything lighter than 12-52 for such a guitar. It'll stay in tune with those.

Hi Jim,
I have changed my strings to 12's, on my epiphone es-295, today so will let them settle for a couple of days and see how i get on with the tuning problems i was having. I have also heard people changing the bridge to a roller bridge, do you think this would help? Also any ideas which 1 would fit it?
Thank you for your help,
Ryan

Yes I have one, and I use 12's. There are no problems with staying in tune.

Hi Alan,
I have changed my strings to 12's today so hopefully that'll fix it. Does your es 295 have a proper Bigsby on it, or is it the epiphone version bigsby type? As far as i know they were manufactured with both versions, mine's an epiphone type with the 'e' on it. I have heard people change the bridge to a rolling type to help with tuning problems and better use of the bigsby, do you know if this would actually help?
I think mine was made at the 'Peerless' factory, but do you know anywhere i can actually find this out properly just out of curiosity. Any ideas how much these guitars are worth today?
Cheers
Ryan

If you "Google" Epiphone serial numbers you can find out.
My Casino was made the Peerless factory and I was able to find this out including date of manufacture using this resource.

Hi Ryan,

My ES295 is fitted with a genuine Bigsby. I assumed they were all the same. I do not know much about Epiphone, my guitar was an impulse buy and I did not do any research at all. I hope you get yours sorted. I have no complaints with mine.

Cheers,

I have used Bigsby vibrato units on several guitars (Yamaha, Gibson, DeArmond, Guild) with ordinary Tune-O-Matic bridges and had no tuning problems - with the correct gauges of strings.

I'd suggest leaving the stock bridge for the presenta nd trying out the 12-52 for at least the life of one set. You might have no tuning problems either... ;)

Hi Ryan, I'd be interested to know how you get on with those string gauges simply because I have a similar guitar in the Guild Starfire III and was wondering how light I dare go with the strings. I don't play too well owing to my illness as the strength has gone out of my fingers, so as the Guild still has the stock strings in place it's not easy to play. I did put some 10/46 on my Gretsch 6120 and so far I haven't had a tuning problem. I wonder if 11//52 with a plain third might be an option - anybody ? :)

Hi Dave, sorry to hear your illness is affecting your guitar playing, I have a heart condition that also makes my muscles in my hands and arms tire very quickly. I have changed my epiphone strings to 12's now and it has improved the tuning problems i was having, but on the downside, it makes my hands ache and tire a lot quicker than with the 10's i originally used, especially when playing chords. Maybe the answer is with 11's as you suggested.
Cheers

Hi Alan
This is my es 295, with the epiphone bigsby style vibrato. I brought it brand new and it has all original parts on it. My serial no. is R98B 0898 and i believe it was made in the peerless factory, and yes they were made with both Bigsby and Epiphone vibrato systems, just don't know which version was made 1st. I have found it quite difficult to find out much information about these guitars, apart from the odd thing on the internet i've stumbled across. Apparently they are supposed to be quite sought after now, by Scotty Moore fans.
Cheers

Cheers Jim for the advice, i'm going to try the 12's for a couple of months before i change anything.

Enjoy your new guitar when it arrives.

Arrived yesterday - great service from Andertons - and it was just like playing my old Casino. I' m hardly noticing the smaller body size. I wonder if I'll be keeping this one for 14 years? 8-)
