Gibson "Emmy Lou Harris" l200

Good afternoon one and all. Long time no speak.

I am entertaining the idea of buying the above mentioned guitar. Can anyone tell me what the best amplifier would be to use with it please? I already own a VOX AC30 CC2 and two VOX AD 30 VT's. Do I need an accoustic amp for instance?

The answer is:

If you plan to play the guitar electrically-amplified (and if it is fitted with a piezo-type transducer) - Yes.

An ordinary guitar amplifier - even if it's the best in the world - will not sound good with a piezo-equipped guitar (and not even if the guitar is the best in the world).

Such guitars are actually optimised for flattish EQ as found in recording desks, quality PA systems and purpose-built acoustic guitar amplifiers.

Luckily, those amps are relatively plentiful s/h. Try eBay!

Our rhythm guitarist some years ago used a Gibsin Emmy Lou Harris. It is a lovely guitar, smaller than the J200, which suited our petite guitarist. Please see photo below.

We would sometimes plug it into a Fender Acoustasonic, which is made for such acoustic guitars. At shows, it was best plugged into the house PA. Indeed at the studio we often simply plug it into the mixer.

We have been using a J200 and do the same thing.

A decent powered pa speaker and small mixer make a great acoustic guitar amp, a dual use electric/acoustic guitar amp is the Rivera Sedona. AER along with many other makers make dedicated acoustic amps. I still like the pa speaker avenue, add a Fishman Aura pedal to improve the plugged in sound.

Thanks for your feedback/comments. I will bear them in mind, lost out on two Gibson "Emmy Lou Harris" l200's so far. Bloomin' annoying to say the least!

You definitely don't want to modify the sound with an electric guitar amp. So straight to mixing desk/PA or acoustic amp is best.

You might consider routeing through a sound processor on the way to the amp. The good old MagicStomp has some great acoustic presets and it's easy to modify them or create entirely new patches to suit your needs. Even a tiny bit of compression and chorus has a profound effect.

+1 for the Marshall acoustic amp.
Good sound with a very nice chorus effect. Mine (which I've had for over 10 years) is the AS50R (with reverb spring rather than today's AS50D with digital reverb) but the rest seems exactly the same. Recommended.

Why not go for the full size J2OO, Strummer? They should be easier to find. They also sound more full and to my ears much nicer than the ELH. We've used both guitars for Shadows pieces.
