What other equipment are you using?
Two reasons for the question:
(a) Certain guitars which lack "bottom" (Danelectros are an example) simply don't present enough signal when the 601's treadle is over to the left and when the treble is attenuated. Moving the pedal right simply turns up the treble, but when that's all you've got coming out of the guitar in the first place, that's just like turning up the volume.
(b) Some wireless systems are totally incompatible with the DeArmond 601's tone-sweep and effectively neutralise it. I found this out when it was demonstrated to me by Indra Rajah in his rehearsal room in Switzerland. With a guitar lead, the problem disappeared.
So these are things I have actually experienced for myself. I assume you're not using a Dano!
If you're using a wireless system, try the pedal with quality guitar leads.
