Vintage AC 30 / rear topboost

Postby hansaustria » 18 Sep 2010, 16:48

Can anyone describe how does a rear additional top boost work in a vintage AC 30 ?
Is it different ( audible in sound ) to the later implemented one in the ( normal ) control panel ?

Yes the sound is identical,Hank and Bruce had the TB fitted to their early AC30's on the back panel as per the JMI, and then Vox incorparated into the top control panel later on. Keith

Hi Keith, I had one of those in 1961, the shop I bought it from had to phone up Jennings to put one on my amp when I found out you could get them fitted as Vox's had a bit too much bass on them, when I got it I found that it sounded best with both the bass and treble turned up full on both, what a sound, wish I still had it, oh, and my 61 Strat. regards, Brian.

Different A.C.30s seem to have different DNA coding and when you chuck a top boost unit into the mix it's anyone's guess as to how similarly it's going to sound to the one next to it. There are general tones in common (no one will ever mistake an A.C.30 for anything but an A.C.30) but the subtle differences in each one is what makes experimenting so much fun. Top boost amp A can definitely sound close to top boost amp B, but the settings may be dissimilar for the same result. The only way to really see what yours can do is just fiddle about with the bass and treble controls until you've dialed in what you want; it's a bit like using the mixer taps to adjust your bathwater. The sweet spot on my '63 is with the bass full up and the treble backed off very very slightly.

I don`t understand your settings ( Bass full / Treble 3/4 ) not in all. How does the TONE pot on the main panel work in common with the rear added
topboost. Is it similar to the CUT ?
