In which case you need to play " Spring was nearly there "

It's usually those thin, lightweight Trem blocks that have the screw hole drilled all the way through, e.g. Squiers & maybe the earlier Mex Fenders. Best check your Mex block, Rosie. The USA Strat should be fine.

Thanks for all the tips. They're very interesting!
I'll try to tighten the trem bar a bit soon but it seems to go from quite loose to very tight in one turn instead of a gradual change (but maybe that's normal).

hi, when the strat was new did it have a 10mm dia piece of tape over trem hole, this stops the spring falling out but nowhere in the info does it tell you this, so its very easy to loose it, you can buy a pack of 12 about £5 GBP, when transporting strat in case without trem in situ put tape over hole or a bit of foam pushed partly into hole saves loosing springs

It didn't have tape over the hole but it had plastic over the pickguard which I didn't notice for awhile! So I suppose I don't really know if there's a spring in it except it doesn't actually fall out so I'm guessing it's ok?
I tightened the trem bar today to see how it felt and it stayed in position nicely but felt a bit awkward when I was playing so I think I'll have to get more confident in my playing and then adjust my technique to having it in a firmer position.

Hi Rosemary, if you turn guitar upside down(strings facing floor) use hand to cover trem hole to see if spring falls out, if it doesn't it probably already has, use a torch to look in hole or a tooth pick to see if its there,they sometimes stick!(toothpick just fits inside spring)and will pull spring out, keith

Thanks for that tip about the spring. I'll try it when I next use the American Strat. I'm pretty sure it can be tightened more. Tonight I tried out the Mexican Strat after tightening up the trem bar to see if I could get used to playing it without as much room for my hands underneath and it felt more comfortable than before. If I can get used to playing the American Strat the same way I should be right but little changes like that throw me a bit.
