how much of the shadows 'sound' was fender ?

Postby Vincent » Wed Apr 06, 2011 2:38 pm

How many of the Shadows -or Hank recordings ,were Fender and how many recordings were through Vox amps? There was a long period where Hank Marvin switched to Fender having started on Vox . Apparently some models of Fender, such as the Tremolux had a similar voice to Vox. In 2010 he used J.M.I- the company which became known as Vox in the late fifties.

Hi Vincent,
Regarding the JMI amps used in 2010,these had no connection to the Vox company,Jennings Musical Instruments. The 2010 amps were marketed JMI standing,I understand, for Justin's Musical Instruments,a branch of Music Ground. They represented Vox but were NOT Vox.

In the early days there is more evidence of them using Selmer amps than Fender. There's quite a bit of TV archive footage as well as photographs to document this.

I think Hank had requested the new Vox Top Boost unit to sound more like the Fender amps so he certainly had heard them but no a lot of evidence he used anything but Vox in the early days but he has used Mesa Boogie later on in the seventies and as Dave said Selmer very early on.

Here is an article that sums it up

As Dave said, in the early "Drifters" days, they were using Selmer amps, then started to use Vox Amps, first with AC15s, and later with AC30s which were designed at the Shadows' request for louder amps. All of this is well documented.
They only used Fender amps ocassionally.

It was rumoured at one time that they used Fender amps inside Vox cabinets! Strenuously denied by all, and no evidence to suggest that it was anything other than Vox innards.

Selmer amplifiers (from the late 1950s onward into th early 1970s) were based solidly on Fender designs (just as Marshalls were).
