Although I do not use tape echoes, I have a Zoom 2000, I just wondered if these units also need demagnetising from time to time as we used to do with the old reel to reels and tape cassette machines

I know that whenever I did this it certainly breathed new life into the sound emanating from the machines

There is nothing to be demagnetised in digital units such as the Zoom 2000...

Hi Bob.
Good question. I think it would do no harm to sweep the heads with a suitable de magnetising tool occasionaly. It cant do any harm if used correctly.
I still have mine which I bought in the late 70's. Looks like another trip up in to the loft.
Didier hi, I think Bob is refering to the heads on the tape echo's, not digital units.
Scott hi, I will assume Eric still uses the same tape now as he did when the units were first produced, in which case I will be 105yrs old when I have to order a new tape from Eric. He provided five spare tapes with my unit. Have you ever demagnetised the heads on your unit?
Regards Geoff.

He refers to a Zoom 2000 which isn't a tape echo unit.

No Didier I think you misunderstood what I was sayiing, I said I had a Zoom in passing but was wondering if the tape echoes needed demagnetising
as did the old reel to reel tape machines as they became magnetised from the oxide on the tapes and lost their sparkle

I was asking the question because I had a digital machine so did not know the answer

Hope that explains what i meant

You wrote : "I have a Zoom 2000, I just wondered if these units also need demagnetising from time to time"

No Problem Didier, I should probably have put the part about the Zoom in brackets

I guess its up to judging by the various comments, when i got my ESE back 2003 (the first production model) Eric advised me to unhook the tape tension arm to avoid putting a dent in the rubber wheel and causing it to knock in use, so i always have and I got 7 years out of the tape it was the splice that snapped. 2 tapes in 8 years isn't bad :D

Scott

That's what he told me too Scott...

Hi Geoff

No I have never demagnetized the heads so far, never felt the need to.

Hi David, Eric knows what he is talking about so I have always done what he said, who am I to argue lol.

This could really make me look like a dimwit but what rubber wheel are you locating. Do you mean somewhere under the bonnet? There is no sign of any rubber at all on mine anywhere on top deck.
Cheers Tony
