DRAMA MONTAGE

DRAMA MONTAGE – volumes 1 and 2.

Having just listened to disc 1 of this 2 CD set, I can see (or rather hear!) why it became one of the most successful of the Bruton library albums. By the time you’ve listened to the first couple of tracks you just know that Brian was at the top of his game, showing a total understanding and mastery of the job in hand. The music was tailored specifically to the requirements of a TV cop or thriller show and, as such, is very much a ‘concept album’. This is atmosphere with a capital A. Plenty of echoing percussion, reverberating electric piano chords, eerie synth sounds and repetitious ostinato themes and bass lines. Plenty of music here that would be ideal for car chases, fights, stake outs. Plenty of gradual crescendos and steadily ramped up tension! I gather that music from this album was used in, amongst other things, Return of the Saint, Strangers, Bergerac, The Famous Five, Shoestring, Minder and, of course, The Sweeney! If you were watching TV in the late ‘70s or early ‘80s then you will have heard pieces from this album, no doubt about it! The booklet includes a nice three page feature on Brian and a couple of pages devoted to the story of Bruton. This would be the perfect companion to the earlier KPM compilation, ‘Aim High’, and with the Guv’nor’s birthday just round the corner, this is gonna get plenty of play over the next few days!

Totally agree with your comments Chris, lots of great pieces which conjure up images, and as you say Brian at the top of his game.
