Flat wound Strings

Postby Billyboygretsch » Sat Aug 23, 2014 9:59 pm

A friend of mine uses Optima flat wound 24 karat gold plated strings. They are no longer made but he acquired a number of sets. I had never heard of these before has anyone else heard of them or indeed used them

These are the guitars with the strings fitted to the two 61 fenders. Note the gold plating on the Precision Hardware done because the strings didn't look good with chrome.

I hadn't heard of these until you mentioned them, Bill. What do they play like?

Apparently they were discontinued about 10 years ago my friend wrote to the MD and they made up another batch. He ordered 20 sets and they sent them Free of Charge ! Whether or not they still have some I am not sure. They would need to contacted.

I am not a bass player but Apparently very similar to normal flatwound but as he puts it a little more sparkle ?. He has used them for 25 years.

Asked again and he stated no tarnishing hold their sound for longer and feet nice to the touch. Also good if anyone allergic to nickel.

I'm not using flatwounds at the moment but my favourites are Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats. Good bright punchy sound and they feel silky smooth under the fingers.
