My son in Colorado has just sent this pic of my new bass purchase.
Taken with his Iphone. so not the greatest quality, but I'm getting excited about it's arrival in early June.

Don't drill extra holes for the screws... use the existing ones as far as you can, but before fitting, cut the heads off some extra screws and superglue them into the superfluous holes... no damage and no reduction in resale value...

Thank you for the tip. I was also investigating the posibility of having a 10 hole pickguard custom made, but they're around $US 45!
Any advice on strings?

I agree with Jay's advice about strings. I also use Thomastik flats.

As to scratchplate, it really is your choice. I don't care for the gold either but hey... You have bought a fiesta red guitar which is the key thing for that 'authentic' look. The maple neck isn't what the Shadows used, incidentally. Their first red P Bass was a rosewood one.

Have fun playing it, that's the main thing!
