Size does indeed matter. The more air you shift the better.
I have an ABM and do get a sound I like! So go with your ears.
Provided you have enough oomph, you should be able to get a pleasing sound from a reasonable bass.
The point about ensemble playing is also well made. You need to hear your instrument as part of a band before you can be really sure your sound is right.
