Dear Phil and friends: Is this Dave Richmond on bass? And is it a Fender jazz bass? I couldn't get a good look at the control knobs to count them, but the scratch plate looks too small/short to be a p-bass (I think). And the headstock looked like a Fender to me, and not a Burns...I am trying my best.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Best wishes,
Donna

During the main period in question, Dave is usually quite recognisable by his prominent "mutton-chop" facial hair, but always (when playing) by his original 1962-style Burns Black Bison Bass. There's a caricature sketch of him on the Brian Bennett / Alan Hawkshaw / Dave Richmond LP "Misty" sleeve reverse (recorded as Collage). The sketch was used as the main sleeve illustration on the CD reissue. That's him in the middle:

When he was fairly young, but showing the bass to good advantage:

Interesting light and shade on Marvin, Welch and Farrar:

Phil.

It's difficult to get a clear view of the bass, but it looks like a Precision (short metal bridge cover and non-offset body shape). Perhaps a Jazz neck though - it does look quite narrow, and the video was presumably made before Fender started doing hybrid basses with shapes and features interchanged.

looks like a precision to me also, though the video is very dark.
this was from a Dutch Tv show 1979/80 i cant recall fender making hybred jazz/precisions back then.
but looking at the clip i cant see any bridge pickup, so i would presume a fender precision.
i think the actual bass you can hear is Alan Jones from the string of hits lp.
as this is not a live performance.

I reckon a PB, possibly sunburst - I think there are other clips around from the same show...
