You've got me there.

Although I've owned/played many Burns guitars, I've not played one of their basses.
Shame on me, I'll have to put that right.

Listening wise gain, I'm more early Shads.

But I do find the combinations of S/C and H/B, on the Gryphon, come up with some beautiful tones.

We Wurzels in the West Country are quite fortunate because Mansons (Exeter) organise their annual Guitar Show, included are bass clinics which attract top bass session players.
Mansons also had an exclusive bass clinic with Stu Hamm, yes the great man came to Exeter.
The overriding impression with these pro's is their sheer versatility, they'll slap and pop, play an entire tune (lead, rhythm, bass, percussion) by tapping, slapping, plucking, picking a 4 string bass and easily break into 60's smooth melodic bass lines. All with modern basses and amps. There is no doubt that we have some amazing bass equipment today.
Alan Jones and Mark Griffiths used various modern basses (Alembic, not sure) in their early days with the Shads which sounded great, so there is a place for modern gear here, perhaps not so much for the purists. Most of us on this forum still use Precisions and Burns but with modern amps.
But I must admit I have a mega P bass bias.

I do love a nice retro bass, whether it's authentic or re-issue.

I've always preferred J-basses to the P-Bass.

But it's also nice to have a bass that can do most sounds, with all the mod cons of a contemporary instrument. Yet still have a cool look.

Gordon Smith make some fantastic stuff, this looks good, not really to my own personal taste but hats off to them!
