I'm ashamed to say it's taken David Bowie's death and the extensive media coverage of his career to make me realise what an extraordinary creative genius he was and how much great music he made. I remember how friends at school tried to persuade me to listen to
Hunky Dory and
Ziggy Stardust but all I was interested in was trying to persuade them that
Rockin' With Curly Leads or
Me and My Shadows were great LPs. I never really listened to songs like Life on Mars properly until now - just took them for granted.
Anyway, even if you're not a fan, surely it's preferable to hear media coverage of David Bowie rather than endless 'historical sex abuse', 'radicalised Jihadi suicide bombers' and 'freak weather - what are we doing to our planet?' etc. which seems to constitute 90% of the news nowadays.
