Tom Springfield RIP

Postby GoldenStreet » Mon Aug 22, 2022 9:03 pm

Since the passing of Judith Durham, it has very recently been announced that Tom Springfield died in London on 27th July, aged 88. For such a versatile musical figure in the 60s (and during his National Service in the 50s), it seems extraordinary that he would effectively retire from the industry in 1970 at just 36 years old. Although the decades have passed, his legacy lives on. RIP Tom.

Thanks, Bill, for drawing this sad news to my attention. What a talent! The Carnival is Over is such an emotional song - just the title gives me goosebumps. Yes...what has he been doing since 1970?

Shadows link...according to his Wikipedia page - he recorded El Cangaceiro (The Bandit) with some friends in the 1950s whilst on National Service, which The Shadows sang on their Out of The Shadows LP. Also, he did some writing with Clive Westlake - who co-wrote (or adapted from a Chopin waltz!) Man from Nowhere for Jet.

Tom also wrote "A World Of Our Own" for The Seekers, which The Shadows and Patricia Bredin performed on the "Wish Upon A Wishbone" TV show on Christmas Day of 1966, recently released on the "On TV Vol.3 1966-1967" CD.
