Shocking news. Saw him and the other actor geezer on stage last year. Jeff was his usual brilliant self. A true guitar legend.

He was indeed one of the great and influential guitarists to start in the 1960s. Another legend gone... Rest in peace Jeff.

Sad news.

Apart from 'Shapes of Things' Jeff rather passed me by - has anyone any suggestions on where to start looking back at his material (not keen on absolute shrieking guitar madness though).

Blow by Blow maybe?

Here's Micky Most, Jeff's record producer talking about 'the hit that Jeff hated' (from Micky's interview for the radio programme The Record producers in 1980)
" Jeff Beck's roots were probably in R&B because he'd been with The Yardbirds. We had an association with The Yardbirds and Jeff said 'I can't work with them any more (he was always falling out with them), and 'I wanna be a pop star"
"I said 'I've got a pop song called Hi Ho SIlver Lining. Can you sing? He said 'Not very well'. None of the rest could sing so we went in the studio and recorded it."
"A bit of fun and the record became a bit of a legend record. You go to a disco and everyone wants Hi Ho SIlver Lining
(cue the record with the reverse guitar intro)

Ray,

I still have my original (1967 / 1968) Columbia singles:
Hi-Ho Silver Lining / Beck's Bolero [instrumental]
Tallyman / Rock my Plimsoul and
Love is Blue / I've Been Drinking

Plus all the Yardbirds singles that featured Jeff:

Heart Full of Soul / Steeled Blues [instrumental]
Evil-Hearted You / Still I'm Sad
Shapes Of Things / Mister, You're a Better Man Than I
Over Under Sideways Down / Jeff's Boogie [instrumental]
Happenings Ten years Time Ago / Psycho Daisies (Jeff sings lead on this one)

AND the rare EP "Five Yardbirds":

My Girl Sloopy [the whole of Side 1]
I'm Not Talking" / I Ain't Done Wrong

And of course, the 1966 LP "The Yardbirds" (better known as "Roger The Engineer", which is a label and not an instruction).

Thank you for reminding me of them all.

I think your best bet would be to get a CD retrospective of The Yardbirds, concentrating on the eighteen months or so that Jeff was a member. He released a relatively few tracks while with them (see my other post nearby and add in twelve tracks for the LP - i think it's 25 tracks in total, not including out-takes and live versions).

I checked Amazon with a view to recommending a CD, but recommendations are off the menu at the moment. That's because, driven by the demand algorithms, prices are sky high (as often happens when someone prominent dies). It also happened with Cilla Black and Ken Dodd - but it'll settle down in a month or two.

Sad news indeed. JB was a big fan of Hank's sound. His group recorded a version of Hank's Throw Down a Line at the sessions for his Beck-Ola LP but it didn't get onto the finished album. Available since as a 'bonus track', I believe.
