R.I.P Roger Whittaker

Postby russ » Tue Sep 19, 2023 8:57 pm

Sad news yesterday of the death of Roger Whittaker.
He had a few tenuous links to the Shadows of course.
Sang with Cliff and Hank on one of Cliff's TV shows, Marvin Welch and Farrar sang "Lady of the Morning" on one of his own TV shows and Bruce produced his album "The Genius of Love" in the late 1980's.
The Shads covered Roger's and Des O'Connor's revival of "The Skye boat song" on the Simply Shadows album too.
Don't hear Roger's songs played on the radio much these days, even though at least one of his great songs easily qualify as one of the Greatest Hits of the 70's.

Well now Roger sadly has said his "Last Farewell' and his "Leaving" has reminded us of a once popular talented songwriter and performer, something I think a lot of us miss today.

Saw him in concert supporting Herb Alpert and the TB - he could whistle harmonies. Amazing.

Sad news. I once won tickets to his concert at Blackpool Opera House. He did the whole show with just a
pianist and his guitar. Enjoyed all his records.

"The Genius Of Love" album has quite some Shadows connections:
- Bruce Welch as the producer.
- Cliff Hall on keyboards.
- Harry Bogdanovs on keyboards.
- Alan Jones on bass guitar.
- Brian Bennett on drums.
- Frank Ricotti on percussion.
- Tony Rivers on backing vocals.
- Tony Clark and Dick Plant as the engineers.

Rest in peace Roger...
