Dave Brubeck RIP

Postby GoldenStreet » 06 Dec 2012, 11:38

A tribute to the man (and Paul Desmond) who created his own special niche in music.

Great attempt for the period by the Fentones at Take Five.

Sad to hear this . Although he was 91, it still makes us think of our own mortality.
So many great renditions of Take Five , his own ,The Fentones (superb playing by
Jerry Wilcox) ,Chet Atkins , and the Spotnicks to name but a few.

Very sad, but inevitable at some stage I suppose.
Another of my "Heroes" departs to a better place.
Rest in peace, Dave - and thanks for the inspiration and GREAT music!

Brubeck did some wonderful work with unusual time signatures. Take Five in 5/4 is the best known, of course, but Unsquare Dance and Blue Rondo a la Turk are also outstanding.

Here's an assortment of Shadows doing a rather nifty tribute...

I've often wondered if the Shads ever considered playing or recording an arrangement of Take Five in the early 60s, say, as an album track, given their predilection for the jazz style of numbers like Nivram, Dean's Theme (originals, admittedly) and others. It might have become something of a classic in its own way!
