Applejack, anyone?

Postby nick allen » 05 Nov 2011, 14:05

I'd be very interested to see the tab for this Jet Harris/Tony Meehan tune. Am I right in thinking it was done on a twelve-string?
Thanks in advance.

It wasn't a twelve string Nick. That's not to say you can't play your own version on one though.

My old mate Stratpicker posted a splendid version of this recently.

If I remember rightly Jet played it on a Gibson acoustic. Possibly a J 45 or similar.

Cheers, Alan.

Who knows what was used on the recording?

But for promo appearances on TV at the time (all mimed, none live), Jet used a Harmony Sovereign Jumbo, distinctive because of its body shape (combining the Martin/Ditson dreadnought and Gibson Super Jumbo shapes) and the white trussrod-cover.

He is pictured with the Harmony on the cover of the 1994 Castle Communications CD release of the "Inside" album (though you can't see the headstock in that crop of the shot, the guitar still shouts out "Harmony").

On that last link, you'll see (just a little way down the page) an attractive looking Harmony Sovereign...

The Harmony range wasn't cheap in the UK, but was significantly more affordable than (say) Gibson or Fender. In 1963, a J-45 would have been priced at about £90 (the 1965 Selmer catalogue lists it at 88 guineas), whereas the Sovereign was around £50. The Harmony was made of solid woods - with a bound neck - and a good example (I used to have one) was worth having.

Joe Moretti played the lead on the record of Applejack, and also Scarlett O'Hara.
