I remember, way back in about 1988, having a practise or two with a band in a local carpet warehouse or somesuch. They were a proper 1980s Heavy Metal band, sounding somewhere between Iron Maiden and Judas Priest etc... I think we all had pretty long hair. Anyway, during one of the breaks (tea, fag, not instrumental) someone said "Do you smoke, Chris?" To which I replied "No". To which there came general mutterings of approval and "great, we're a non-smoking band at last!" (I think the previous drummer and bass guitarist were smokers from what I can recall). So thereby demolishing the oft trotted out myth that all heavy rockers drink AND SMOKE as I their lives depended upon it.

Never actually joined this particular band, by the way, and sadly most bands that I have played in (a variety of styles) have always seemed to include at least one or two smokers. I agree that pubs are now much nicer to be in and you don't go home with your clothes smelling of cigarette smoke (something I always hated in the old days).

P.S. I remember asking girl (also a drummer) why she smoked. She thought about it for a moment and said something like "I don't know. I suppose it fills a kind of inner emptiness'. I believe she has since stopped playing the drums and smoking!
