Really?

The punkah wallah was a Raj-era servant who hand-operated a ceiling fan on hot days.

Someone hand-operating a windscreen wiper (as suggested) seems at least worthy of the same sort of title and job description, wouldn't you say?

Depends I suppose on whether you consider the term 'wallah' to be demeaning or honorary!

Why demeaning or honorary? The definition of 'wallah' is 'a person in charge of or involved with something'. It isn't a derogatory (or honorific) word.
