Hi Derek,
I'm pleased to notice that you are interested in railways and in steam locomotives, too.
In Germany we had two bad years for steam, 1977 in West Germany and 1988 in East Germany, though some narrow gauge
lines in Saxonia were still served by steam locomotives after 1988 and are even steam operated today.
At least we have some steam locomotives which are owned by steam preservation societies who spend a lot of money and a lot of time to make those engines run. In Germany we will celebrate the 175th railway anniversary in 2010 but until now there are no signs that the national railway company called Deutsche Bahn will organise something similar to the parades
we had in 1985, maybe there will only be 2 steam locomotives owned by Deutsche Bahn ( The " Adler " and the " Saxonia " )
to be seen in action, all other steam locomotives and most of the wagons are owned and operated by private societies.
Let's hope that someone will organise a real historical railway parade at a central point in Germany, wherever it is.
Best regards Peter K
