Forgotten Men Of Pop

I was listening to Sounds of The Sixties today on radio 2 when they played The Small Faces record of "Watcha Gonna Do About It" and I remembered that they had another member called Jimmy Winston in their early days.This prompted me to think about other early members of groups who left or were replaced by others and never made the big time and faded away, I have made a list of all the ones I can think of.

1,Jimmy Winston- Small Faces 2, Norman Hale- Tornados 3, Don Rathbone -Hollies 4, Anthony Topham -Yardbirds,
5, Roy Lynes -Status Quo, 6, Nick Simper -Deep Purple, 7, Terry Smart-Drifters( Shadows) 8, Pete Best -Beatles
9 Syd Barret- Pink Floyd.

That`s all I can think of for now there must be more somewhere.

I know I am repling to my own post here I thought that there might have been more interest.When I heard The Small Faces playing "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" it put me in mind of a film I saw in 1966 when in the good old days you got two films for the price of one and not just adverts and trailers that you get today. The film was in black and white and the second feature it was centerd around the Pirate ship Radio London ,there was an atractive blonde girl in it and music from The Small Faces and that`s all I could remember. Since then I searched on the internet and found out the film was called DATELINE DIAMONDS and did feature the original Small Faces line up with Jimmy Winston we all think of the line up with Ian McLagan,the film also included The Chantelles, Mark Richarson and a very young Kiki Dee. Back to my original thread it seems the wheel can come full circle as Anthony " Top" Topham is in the present Yardbirds line up and David Marks rejoined The Beach Boys some fifty years later.

"Dateline Diamonds" was shown on one of the free movie channels on Sky a couple of years ago. Apart from the relatively few minutes of musical performances, it was 100% dramatic ordure.

I went to a 60s gig in Bristol a while back featuring today's incarnation of bands like The Animals, Zombies and Yardbirds. Not surprisingly most of them (apart from The Zombies) could only muster one original member and in the case of the Yardbirds it was in fact Anthony "Top" Topham. So, neither gone nor forgotten. He did rather stand out though as some of the other band members had hardly started shaving! They played well though and did justice to the music.

Wasn't Jim McCarty on drums?

Until recently, original rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja was still treading the boards with the band, but has had to take a back seat for health reasons.

To be honest Jim, I can't remember who was on drums but I'm pretty sure Chris Dreja wasn't with them.
Maybe the band has more than one "incarnation" - a bit like the Searchers!

Don't be disheartened, Derek, if you don't get instant replies. A lot of members dip in and out. For example, I've been away on holiday for three weeks so this is my first chance to start catching up

A stand-out example in a Shadows context is Dave Richmond, who left Manfred Mann just before 5-4-3-2-1.

Dateline Diamonds was interesting for the music performances and for the shots of the ship but the lead character Dale Meredith had never studied what disc jockeys do and lacked authenticity.
