Need modern TV connection info please!!

Postby Stratpicker » Thu Jan 29, 2015 2:05 pm

Our old LCD TV is now on its last legs and will have to be replaced soon.
HOWEVER – it runs with a stand alone Humax HD recorder and a DVD Player both of which run SCART to SCART into the TV.
It looks like the new LED TVs use what is called HDMI. Is that just a posh word for SCART?
If not is there some kind of cable / adaptor that can be fitted to the SCART lead before it goes into the TV as HDMI?
If thats not the case, then do I assume that all that kit is also going to be scrap?!
Any info for an electronics luddite like me would be greatly appreciated.

Both devices should possess an HDMI connection Slock.
I have both of those + a PVR going into my tele with HDMIs.
It's a better picture anyway.
You only need a couple of HDMI leads.
On ebay....... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1M-Metre-Premium-Gold-HDMI-to-HDMI-High-Speed-1080p-LCD-HDTV-Video-Lead-Cable-3D-/331454250513?pt=UK_Computing_Sound_Vision_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item4d2c367e11

Hi Ian,

I have just changed my TV to a smart TV and I have pretty much the same set up as yourself.

Neither my DVD Recorder or my DVD Player had HDMI outputs.

I bought a SONY BRAVIA 48" which has still got 2 scart connections on the back,

if your DVD Recorder has got Component out on the back you can also use that for connection to your TV

the outputs look like phono outs but there are 3 of them GREEN BLUE and RED. You will also have to

use a standard phono lead i.e. RED and BLACK for the audio but only for your DVD Recorder, using Component lead.

If they both have HDMI outputs then use HDMI leads much better quality.

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers,

Shindig

Hi Ecca
well, a grub around on my hands and knees (steady!!) has confirmed that, A - the Medion DVD player (of 2003 vintage) only has a SCART socket on the back, B - the Humax HDR, of even OLDER vintage (so old we cant remember WHEN we bought it!) only has the SCART and then some Audio in and out RCA type plugs.
So, I guess they will both need an adaptor cable that fits to the outboard (loose) end of the SCART cable before it goes HDMI into the Tele, n'est pas?

I've since discovered that the TV of choice has ONE SCART input. Only found out by ringing them!!
Can I use this to go between the gadgets and the TV?

Hi Ian,
That probably won't work. SCART is an analog transmission whereas HDMI is digital. Both sockets cannot simply get linked to each other. You would need a video converter similar to this one:

HDMI converter back.jpg

This one has just one input and I don't know whether they are available with two. This one costs around EUR 55 over here. (You get a DVD/blue ray player for that sum).
Best wishes,

Yes - but you'll have to physically switch from to the other at this junction box .

By the time you've faffed about with fancy HDMI / SCART converters you might as well get a new DVD for less money.
There are loads about, dead cheap and in all probability better than the antique that you have.

Argos.........

Here's one with HDMI that's cheaper than a converter.......

So I reckon the solution is to plug the HDR into the single SCART, chuck the old DVD player into the Recycling and buy a new one for £30 an plug that into the HDMI.
Simples? :?:
