Hi Abel,

I was thinking about your own journey from Stanstead to Southampton. I don't want to pour cold water on Jim's efforts, but an alternative would be to use the National Express coach service from Stanstaed to Southampton. The whole journey would take about 5 hours and cost in the region of £30. Only 1 change of coach at Victoria Coach Station. A much more comfortable option. If you've got baggage to carry, the London underground is not baggage friendly at all. Lots of stairs, certainly at Victoria!

Hi Ian,

I just saw your message regarding my own travel from Stansted to Southampton.

5 Hours, Ouch!.
I don't know how long Jim's solution would take with transfers at Liverpool Street and walk to Victoria coach station, but
It might still get me there at about the same time, between 1 and 2 PM I guess.

Has anyone done this before.

Thank you much,
Abel

Hi Abel,

I've done some checks to get some idea of timings for you.

Stansted to Victoria is 1 hr 15mins via Tottenham Hale underground and not Liverpool Street. It seems this is the quickest!

Victoria Coach station to Southampton is 2hrs 15mins. Walk time from Victoria underground to coach station should take only 10 mins.

This does not account for any waiting times. I do know however that the waiting time at Tottenham Hale is only about 5 mins.

I regularly travel from my home near Brighton to Heathrow Airport, and there is little difference between train + underground than going by coach except that coach a lot easier because of baggage!

Anyway Abel, I hope all this info helps and you have a great trip.

Best Wishes

Ian

Hi all,

Thank you for your help.

Ian, I am in the process of booking my train.
If I understand, I take the Standard Express from Stansted airport and get down at Tottenham Hale Underground (instead of Liverpool Street).
then I take another train from the Tottenham Hale Underground station to the Victoria Underground station then walk from Victoria Underground station
to Victoria Coach Station as suggested earlier by Jim?.

Is this the right place to book everything ?.

Sorry for the troubles, but I need to figure out everything before we leave as I won't have a lot of time there.

Thank you much,
Abel

Abel

Everyone is trying to be helpful - I can see that. I just have this picture in my mind of you dragging your luggage and Guitar. If it were me I would take the least physical.
Train and underground travel at this time is a bit hit and miss. We have underground strikes which can pop up at any time - the railways can't keep to a timetable and there is a great deal of work going on on the tracks.

I offer the Coach details - the website and the timetable. I am not sure if you can make the 08:40 - but the 10:00 is most probably on. If your flight is delayed there are later coaches. These are not all of the coaches for the day - if you log on you will be able to look at the whole day.

Hi Ian,

I am grateful you are all helping as it is a pretty complicated system you've got there.
Even if I brought my guitar (which I am obviously not), you have much better ones in the club to play with if I am allowed to use one.

You are right, the best schedules for me are the 8:40 and the 10:00.
Since you didn't mention it, I assume the routes and stops I mentioned in my previous message were correct.

Abel

Is SJB.

As far as I know the Coach will stop at Victoria - where you may have to change buses.

I think it has several stops on the way to Southampton. My wife says it stopped in Guildford and Portsmouth - you just stay on.

As you will have had a very early start - I suggest you have a doze from about Guildford to Portsmouth. Then you won't get upset when the Coach goes past Waterlooville.

Hi Abel,

Yes, all those timings look OK. You will only have to change coaches at Victoria which will be quite easy.

I hope all the info I've given is OK. I've been doing all this from China, where I've been for the last 3 months. The internet here is a bit wanting to say the least! I return to the UK in a couple of weeks thank goodness!

Enjoy your trip.

All Best Wishes

Hi all,

Thank you much for your help. I can't wait to be at your club, meet you all, see you play and play myself as it is going to be the
only good time I will probably have during my short stay in UK.
(I'll bring a few BT's but I would love to play with the band too).

Ian,
Enjoy your stay in China as it is a historical place (didn't mean to bother you there, but appreciate greatly your help).

Stuart,
Sorry for the name mismatch. you made it easy for me to understand the British Jargon: Coach / Bus, Tube, Underground, Train, which
simply translate in the US into Bus (AKA Greyhound), Metro and Train.

I just found out that the London Underground will be affected by engineering work at Tottenham station form August 8th to August 30th.

I'll try to catch the 8:40 AM Coach, if not, the 10 AM and change at Victoria (I got it after many misses).
Is it ok to buy my ticket now or get it once there since I am not sure I can catch the 8:40.?

(I wish I had a light acoustic to practice in the ... coach (5 hours)).
At any rate, the latest I should get there would be 3 PM (God willing).
Jim told me that the Club's meeting start at around 7 PM. I think I'll be ready around 4PM if Stuart can pick me up on his way to
WaterlooVille. So nice of him.

Stuart,
I can either call you if you PM me your phone number (I will definitely PM you mine, but I need to remember to buy a UK prong for my US charger).
The Novotel phone number is: +442076600686 and my last name is Khineche (they will issue the room number upon arrival).

Blessings to all,
Abel
