White Stripes

Postby drakula63 » Wed Jul 05, 2017 7:29 pm

Does anyone remember a piece in one of the music mags in the early 2000s in which it was stated that the White Stripes (Meg and Jack White) were or had been recording in London and they or their engineer were trying to get a sound similar to the 'mid 60s sound of The Shadows'.

I am guessing that this was for the album 'Elephant' recorded in 2002 at Toe Rag Studios in Hackney.

I know the Toe Rag engineer, Liam Watson (hope I've remembered his name right) is a Shadows fan and wrote part of the article on The Shadows in Mojo magazine in 2004 (which Mojo 'recycled' in an expensive 60s special last year...). He wrote an amusing guide to some Shadows stuff (well-known and obscure) from the early-mid-60s). Also The Rapiers recorded their You're Never Alone With... LP there.

Yeah, that'll be him. His name is in an article on the making of the album, so must be correct.

EXCELLENT! I knew I had not imagined it, but sometimes one has to wonder with the passing of time, especially since the Shadows were very much out of vogue in the early 2000s, until the Final Tours of 2004, 2005. I've got the MOJO magazine from last year and it was discussed here at the time. Good to know that there are fans everywhere and influential ones at that. I shall listen to 'Elephant' quite closely when I get the chance.

Thanks.
