I agree the guitar work on R&G is pretty good but the track is a horrid pastiche of what the Stones etc were doing at the time.

Yes, I'd have wanted to strip out the vocals & FX and fill the gaps with something in keeping with the lead breaks. Bearing in mind, though, that singles in those days came with B sides as well as A, The Miracle was up there with Wonderful Land, Atlantis and Theme For Young Lovers.

I'd bought all the singles from Wonderful Land to Flingel Bunt as they came out and backtracked as far as Apache. I hesitated over GWTLBL but R&G didn't make the collection until a resurgence in my interest in the 2000s. I didn't discover the Burns works until then either.

When the Shadows moved to Burns in 1964, it wasn't specifically for their new material. They used them in their TV and Stage gigs for all their numbers, everything from Apache onwards. I think we have all contributed to the lower profile of the era by tying the guitars only to the records they were on. If we followed that logic, we would play the 1963 hits on White Fenders, not Red.

Rather than doing a Burns set, I'd be all for doing a full Shadows gig using the Burns guitars throughout, just as they did for over five years. We would be just as authentic as we are using Red Fenders: more so, because the Red period was relatively short. (Yes, they did go back to them later, but it was much later.)

We do this with my band every now and then. They do make a nice change from the fenders but i personally find the Burns cumbersome and i am not a fan of the tremolo system

Anyone know the real reason in particular why HBM after the Burns was stolen
went back to the Strat rather than get another Burns to go on with.

As i understand it Baldwin had closed production by 1970 so a new Burns was out of the question.

Er....the Strat is a 'better' guitar, less 'made in the garden shed by your local enthusiast barber' or made in Russia and with less superfluous decoration and not quite as good a sound? I don't think people would have gasped so much seeing a double page spread in 'Boyfriend' of HBM holding a Burns- maybe in them days they would have... The Burns design is a bit over the top and unnecessary whereas the Strat is tighter and more minimalist, keeping to the essentials but with classic curves. Frankly if The Shadows hadn't used them I doubt many would have bought them. No doubt there will be strong disagreement here...

You may well be right but the reason at the time was purely practical. The lead instrument had been nicked. Another one was needed pronto. A Strat was available, a Marvin was not.

I think the "Foottappers " did a great job presentation and sound wise playing ALL Shads numbers on Burns!
