"One piece of advice to you regarding memory cards ... don't buy one single high capacity card. Buy several smaller ones. This may seem a more expensive option, but if a single card fails and ALL your valuable photos are on that one card .. the you're lost. Always take multiple copies of important photos on duplicate cards. Believe me, I've been there and got the T shirt."

Wise advice from Ian which I can confirm from bitter experience. I was in Italy and my 4Gb card suddenly gave up the ghost when I was on top of a mountain and I lost all my images. I couldn't take them again because I wasn't carrying a spare. When I got home I tried to recover them using several software programs available on the Net but all to no avail.

I also suggest using a well known brand of card such as SanDisk (the one that failed was of an unfamiliar make and came with the camera when I bought it in the US). I now use a 2Gb SanDisk (which will store over 400 images on my Sony DSLR) and I always carry two similar spares which, touch wood, I haven't had to call on. These cards are not expensive when purchased online.

Cheers.

Hi Tony,

It was a Sandisk I ordered when I found there wasn't one included with the Nikon.

Heard good reports about them, there's so many to choose from even in the same range.

Cheers

Hi Muriel,
Yes indeed, and that's why I've been on the run ever since, but getting absolutely nowhere. "Such is Life".

True about not supplying the cards.
I was in the photo trade many years ago and the story then was that the dealers made little profit on the camera.
The camera was the "vehicle" used to sell the accessories.
Then the mark up on a camera body was around 10%.
The profit on accessories... i.e. camera cases, bags, batteries, filters, tripods, and all the other knick knacks was 50% or more.
So the guy behind the counter wasnt doing his job properly.
You should have walked out with the camera and those little "essentials" that you really, really need.

Hi
Yep I'm interested in photography have been for many years now, remember the Zenith SLR, that's what I started with.

I'm now a big canon fan, started with the basic EOS 1000 film camera before going digital to the 350D. finishing on the 20D which I use today. Lens wise I have a 35-80 USM and a 80-200 both Canon of course.
I did try the Canon S1 non DSLR with a fantastic 450mm zoom but missed the versitality of the SLR but with the sacrifice of the added weight.

I have a canon 430EX11 flash which is great.

On the shopping list is a L series lens but need to win the pools first I'm afraid. Interested in macro stuff as well but sold an excellent w/a lens a couple of years back to fund the purchce of guitar pup's.

Hobbies who'd have em.

Steve.

Barry,

I'm on the lookout for a SLR and have the Nikon D3000 in mind. Have you used yours yet and can you tell me what you think about it.

I was thinking about the D40 and other Nikons but the prices being asked are not much short of the new model D3000.

Hi Barry,

It's getting like Charlie's site, I think everyone on there's called Barry.

I only had the D3000 for a matter of hours. After lots of unpacking and finally getting a memory card, I realised the 3" LCD on the back of the D3000 was for reading the menus only. NO LIVE VIEW. Coming from the Fuji S9500 I wrongly thought all DSLRs had live view. The camera went back the very next day and I upgraded to the Nikon D90 and allthough it was twice the price, I'm really pleased that I went that route.

I've had a couple of full days with it now and really pleased with the results.

Cheers

If you're still "on the run", try Immodium. It always stops me when I've got the runs :!:

By the way, is your Vegemite, the same as our Marmite :?:
