I enjoyed the Shadows at Sixty documentary, including the bit where Bruce and Brian were talking about how small the Two Eyes Coffee bar was. Brian thought that the small club was the reason that the hand jive became popular, as there was not much room for dancing. According to info on the Internet, there may be some truth in this.
I wondered which came first, the song or the hand jive. Its credited to Johnny Otis as a 1958 release, though when it was conceived is a moot point. In 1957 the film maker Ken Russell is said to have filmed in the Cats Whisker coffe bar, in London and featured Leon Bell and the Bell Cats, who may have started the craze.
I have always liked the Cliff and The Shadows version, but the later recording by Eric Clapton is more true to the beat and tempo of the original.
But then things sink into a risky area - there may be an allusion to S*X. (Adopts Kenneth Williams voice). Ooooh Mr Horne, my names Julian and this is my friend Sandy, quick nurse, the screens, oh Maaatrooooooon............
Kindest regards and keep safe
