ITV - dropping support for Android 6 and earlier

Postby SJB » Fri Jul 03, 2020 8:05 pm

I suddenly noticed that my ITV news app stopped updating a couple of days ago.
I also noticed it was no longer available on Playstore.

I contacted ITV - to ask if there was an issue - this was the reply:-

-----
Good Afternoon Stuart,
Recently we had a reported issue against the app on certain iOS devices.
Following investigation it seems the requirements for downloading the app has changed since the recent update.
You would need Android 4.4 to view the ITV News website & Android version 7.0 to install the News app.
Unfortunately as you have Android version 6.0 you can't use the app, however you can still view information from the website: https://www.itv.com/news

-------
Considering my wife only purchased her phone just over a year ago this is a bit much to make the phone redundant (if all the apps went that way) so soon.
Probably the ITV people think they only have to cater for the people on contract that have a new phone almost yearly.

A few years ago I purchased a smart TV - looking forward to the BBC stuff coming along. By the time they got it up and running - OH! the tv is not not compatible.

I think this situation which attempts to force people to keep buying new TV's and Phones etc should be looked at. An official investigation of some sort.

Hi Stuart

yes this is a common problem. Apple are notorious for it! Ive got an iPad that i have had about 8 years and that can no longer be updated and so a lot of programs can no longer be downloaded or used. Of course its lasted 8 years so i should probably buy a new one but there is nothing wrong with it. I had similar with a MacBook Pro from 2009 that i had to change about 3 years ago now as it could no longer take the system updates. Its frustrating and seems to be part of the throw away society we find these days, everything from cars, washing machines, mobile phones is built to last a short while so we have to upgrade all the time. I guess it fuels the economy but seems a waste to me in a world that is being destroyed by rubbish.

Apple have been on my list of 'Firms I won't give money to' since the 1990s, specifically because of their restrictive business practices.

Whilst on the subject. There was a report in the paper the other day saying the UK are second in the world, after Norway, for throwing out old electric and technology items. Phones, TV's computers etc. We all seem to want the latest model phone or TV and throw out the old unit. Part of the concern about this is the amount of toxic components and plastic contained in the products and also precious metals which are not reclaimed. I don't suppose things will change though and other countries that "dispose" of our waste just store it or bury it and their poorly paid people are exposed to health risks from it. Turkey takes a lot of this waste from UK but it can't process the quantity of it and it ends up being dumped. It's an unregulated process that needs control before it's washed up on our coastline.

This is my thought for the day and I had to share it.

Many people throw out old computers because they have 'got too slow', as if they were a car with a worn-out engine.

All that has really happened is that the hard disk is clogged up. It has too many programs running in the background and programs that need to be loaded during the boot process.

Here are some of my tips for running a 'clean machine'.

1. Set your browser so that cookies are deleted every time you close a session.

2. Set your browser so that memory of the sites you have visited is deleted at the end of each session.

3. Do without anti-virus software and all the other programs that want to look at all your incoming mail and programs. If you are careful, you don't need it.

4. Leave at least 20% of your hard disk unused. It gives the computer 'room to move' when it is shuffling data around.

5. Use an SSD (Solid State Drive) for your operating system. It speeds up the boot time as well as the general speed of operation.

5. If your work on the computer uses large files (video in my case) then use a separate drive. 20 years ago I started using hard drives in caddies which plugged into the tower and were put on a shelf when not in use. These days you can buy a docking station for £15 that will accept bare drives and which plugs into a USB port.

6. Don't believe all that talk about "you have to use the latest version of the operating system because otherwise you'll be in danger". I'm typing this reply on a 15 year-old computer running Windows XP. It boots up in less than 30 seconds, has no anti-virus software and all operations happen in the blink of an eye. I have other computers running Windows 7 and (when it was still supported) I turned off Microsoft updates to avoid those wretched updating delays.

Happy computing!

You can also use a specifc software do delete temporary files and cookies, such as Ccleaner. I use it at least once a day.
And I still use Windows 7 !
