Alice Cooper new single / album

Postby drakula63 » Fri Feb 19, 2021 6:35 pm

Very pleased that one of my closest friends (and former bandmates) Steven Crayn is playing lead guitar on Alice Cooper's new single 'Social Debris'. I've had to keep this secret for almost a year!

To put it all into some context... I've known Steven since 1985 and the first gig I ever did was with him on guitar. We've been in about four bands together, gigged many times and been in a couple of recording studios with various bands. Again, my very first time in a studio (in 1991) was with him. He's a HUGE Alice Cooper fan and once flew all the way from the UK to Phoenix Arizona just to see a reunion gig of the original line up. And now... he's playing guitar with the remainder of that original line-up on Alice's new single. Incredible! And people say that dreams don't come true. They do!

Incidentally, when Steven lived near to him (he doesn't now), he once bumped into Bruce Welch when he was out shopping and had a little chat with him! I gather that he thanked him for all the music.

Oh well... no one seems particularly interested, but the album is out today and seems to be garnering some good reviews...

It's quite incredible to think that producer Bob Ezrin chose Steven to step into the shoes of the late Glen Buxton. I can only imagine how it must feel to be playing lead guitar on an Alice Cooper song with the rest of the original line up. It would, I suppose, be like one of us stepping into the Shadows alongside Hank and Bruce, or maybe Brian and Bruce, etc, and doing a song. The closest I've ever come to this is playing the opening to Toccata, on the actual harpsichord that Francis Monkman used on the sky record, with Mr Monkman standing behind me. OK... not the same at all really!!! (But it felt surreal at the time!)

Anyway, to mark this auspicious day... here's a video clip from 1986. Here's Steven playing an Alice Cooper song called 'Crazy Little Child'. The rest of the motley crew are Gaz on vocals, Sarah on piano, Pete on bass and my good self on drums! Enjoy!

You say there’s not been much response. If I may, I’d say you’re welcome to post in The Lounge about Alice Cooper if you wish to but, this being a ShadowMusic site, please don’t be surprised if not many people see a connection.

Well we are in the Lounge, which is subtitled, 'For Any other Topic.'

We all know this is a Shadows site, but other forms of music are available!

(Although I don't suppose you'd get many on here to admit to that.)

Admittedly no direct connection to the Shadows - or none that I can think of - but a connection to a member of the forum. It's always nice when these things happen - and they happen very rarely! First gig I ever did was with Steven at the Sub in Cleethorpes, at the end of 1985. I think the second was also with Steven, at the Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes at about the same sort of time. Sadly, both venues have now been demolished. I always believed that he would get somewhere, as his skills on the old axe were incredible. We were talking once about the Shads and I remember him describing Let Me Be The One as '...a masterclass in vocal harmony.' So he knows his stuff.

Anyway, speaking of people who know their stuff.... here's Alice Cooper and Bob Ezrin talking about him! It takes a lot to impress me... but I'm impressed!

I see in his promotional interviews for the new album, he is expressing the general view that nobody really expected to get much beyond 30 back then! ;)

It was 'Album of the Week' on Ken Bruce's Radio 2 show last week.
