Not a Shadows thing

Postby Syd62 » 12 Jul 2021, 10:34

While on Youtube the other day I found this clip of a young boy called Larry Collins playing a track called Ramrod. What a showman. Worth a look up.

There were two versions posted Peter, not sure which one was being discussed, this one is when he was older!

Hi Peter,

It also showed him as a young lad at the start on a screen, then his older self playing in front and doing the moves, I totally agree with you about the stage presence and energy!

By my calculation he was 73 when he did this in 2018 (Born in October 1944), sadly it seems he died this year at 76 years old!

Larry Collins certainly was (is???) a phenomenal guitarist. I believe that he was born in 1942. I cannot find any reference to his death on tyhe Internet. His Facebook page is still active, with very recent entries. Yes....a brilliant player for sure. Erm...but this is a site dedicated to the Shads. Loved the video though. :D

Yes, the post is not about the Shads and that is why it’s in The Lounge.

In the 1959 clip, the contribution of Joe Maphis is not to be sneezed at. Although he was best known as a flying-fingers guitar player, in the clip, his fingers fly over that Gibson bass!

This tune was once a Duane Eddy single from 1958 written by Al Casey, the was some controversy about this record some say it was Al Casey playing and not Duane.
