Help with valuation of my Strats

Postby Gerry_Strat » Sat Jan 29, 2022 3:52 pm

Hi
I wonder if any of the members can give me advice on the value of two Strats that I wish to sell.

I have a Classic Player 60s Strat in sonic blue, serial number MZ7082196, which was custom shop designed in the Mexican factory and I believe dates to 2007. It has Custom Shop 69 pick-ups and Rosewood fingerboard.

The other is a 57 re-issue CIJ Strat in sunburst with Texas Specials pick-ups. Serial number R039752, dating I believe to 2003.

Both guitars have only had bedroom use, never been out of the house, and are in mint condition.

I also want to sell other items, including a VoxAD50 50W 1 x 12 amp, Zoom G7.1ut with EFTP, Behringer V-Amp Pro, Alesis M1 active 520 monitors, Alesis multi mix 6 mixer, and Tascam CD-GT1 Mk2 guitar trainer.

All items are in new condition and complete with all leafs and manuals.

Thanks for any help.

Well a starting point as I did, was to take the original purchase price and add an inflationary index
from the subsequent years in ownership.
Look at similar instruments on E Bay as to what sellers are currently looking for.
But it can still be a minefield of other factors i.e. current market demand and if you go trade in to a shop
prices can be quoted well below expectation.
Good luck anyway!!!

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply.

Not sure how to add an inflation index, but I have had a look around the Internet, eBay etc. It seems that the Classic Player (which I think cost £500) is going for all prices from £700 up, and perhaps a bit less for the 57 Strat.

I have been offered £500 each for them locally by a guy running a small music stall. I am tempted, as there is no hassle & worry with postage etc, but I do think they are worth a bit more. They really are in mint condition and haven’t been plugged in for years
However, there is the old saying….a bird in the hand etc….

Cheers

As a rough guide for you I can offer this information.
The Classic Player Strat that I sold was a minter in Sonic Blue and fetched £400.
Two years later I bought another one identical for £450 and still have it.
I recently sold my MIJ Strat, a '62 reissue and in mint condition, Fiesta Red for £775, but other colours including sunburst were only attracting offers of £600 at that time, with many at around £500.
The market seems to fluctuate and there's an element of luck about when you choose to sell. EG my friend sold his red Burns Shadows Special Edition (2005) a few years ago and only got £600 for it, but I sold mine last week for £1275. It can be just down to luck at any given time.
Personally I would be happy to take £500 for each of them if there's no advertising hassle and commission charges.

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply.

Looking at sites like eBay and Reverb etc comparable guitars are going for all prices between £650 to £900. Of course, some of those higher prices are just trying their luck, some even wanting over £100 extra postage from abroad!

They cost me around £500 in 2003 and 2007, but I take your point about avoiding the hassle of postage and of course commission. It seems that the Classic Player is valued higher than the Jap one on the selling sites.

Cheers
