Talking Pictures TV

Postby Teflon » Fri Feb 11, 2022 10:36 pm

Just watched a fascinating little programme on Talking Pictures TV - a short 10 minute film made in '61 about the recording industry and how records were made. It featured Norrie Paramore recording Helen Shapiro at Abby Road. Well worth a watch if it's repeated, the feature was called "Look at Life".

Malcolm Addey is seen in the control room, as well as Norrie Paramor and Helen Shapiro in the studio. That guitar amp was interesting ...

The Radio Luxembourg DJ seen briefly near the end is Ray Orchard.

Excellent piece of nostalgia. I did not realise all that work went into making a vinyl record.

Nice shots (5:03 - 5:14) of a Jaguar XK 140/150 (?) and a Wolseley 6/90(80 LPC). Were either of these Norrie's? I've just bought a Riley 2.6 - very similar to the Wolseley. What a lovely car!

if we're looking at timimgs on that video, 1.57 has a shot of the studio. The guitar player (with the blue jumper and his back to the camera and facing Norrie) is 'Mr Flying fingers' Judd Proctor. He can be seen again at 5.03 walking out of 'EMI' (as Abbey Road wa known then) carrying his guitar case. Perhaps the rhythm guitarist seen at the back is Eric Ford?. Among the violin players is the 'session fixer', mischeviously dubbed 'Dave Moggie' by Rick Wakeman in his book Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star (read the 'Milkman' story, P.99)

The Footage Detectives looks a very interesting programme on TPTV. The Frightened City film was mentioned, and the question of who actually played on the soundtrack. The Boys was another film from the same period where the Shads recorded the theme, but apparently weren’t on the actual soundtrack. So who did play on these two soundtracks ?
