Thanks, Baz, that's really useful information and I'll bear it in mind when I go for my fitting on Friday.

Cheers.

I spent a lot of money on my hearing aids at first in 2016, over £2000 and they were the ones that fit inside the ear and are invisible. They were very good but there were issues with them and for that sort of money I expected perfection so I tried several others with similar issues. As a last resort I went to the NHS hearing clinic and they gave me the ones that I currently have which are the ones that sit behind the ear with a tube but my audiologist has set them up so well for speech and music, that for me they are perfection. If I could get these in the small ones that fit inside the ear, I would have them in a heartbeat. interestingly enough they were the same brand Phonak, but the NHS have older stock. I do have options for increasing or decreasing volume. The main thing is that the 'lost' high frequencies are once again present.
It's now five years since I reverted to using this type of aid and hopefully technology has moved on and I can get the same results with the newer invisible ones which I intend to try. :)

The setting up of hearing aids seems to be the key. When mine were being set up there was a lot of noise coming from the adjacent room - which was not good.
I set my DAW to match my hearing curve and noted some increase in clarity. But the hearing aids seem to go way over the top as it were.
I can and have adjusted them - but there are limits. So maybe we should talk about how to get the audiologist to set up our hearing aids. So many people with hearing aids say they can't get on with them.

I suppose the in ear ones fit the canal fully. Mine have soft ears on them so I think some sound passes straight through. Dave has reminded me that about the same time as he got the first hearing aids for £2000 - a demo of Siemens ones that were very good. These were over the ear - with a tiny insert in the ear canal. The insert had little soft prongs which centralised the insert so most of the sound bypassed the insert with the insert making up the losses where required. Came in at £3000. When I said no way the price came down to £2000. So I said goodbye. The next week I had an NHS test and they said I don't need hearing aids. :D
One point with private aids - my wife suddenly could not get new tubes for hers. The hearing aid was no longer supported. OK she had new aids from the NHS - but these aids were available to private patients. So in our case the NHS picked up the tab.
With the in ear ones I would be concerned about one coming out and loosing it. My hearing aids - app - will tell you where in the world you left them as it can track you. if you enable the feature.

With regard to Ian's comment on relying on someone with good hearing - I was wondering if you put on a Shads record - say FBI - listen to it and set your sound similar maybe your about ok.

In writing about hearing aids one has to be careful - I don't mean this to be funny but - you can't say for example - someone has aid's when you mean hearing aids. English is getting more difficult.

Been following this with interest.

I currently have standard BTE NHS aids with no special program set, just standard for speech.

I normally practice through headphones and take my aids out whilst practicing. Out of interest, today I left them in. When playing Apache through my VOX VT20+ on an AC15 setting, the sound was nothing like I was used to. It was muddy and bassy, I took the aids out and the lovely AC15 chime was back.

Tim,
I am not an audiologist - but - see my earlier post about "Cookie Bite hearing loss"
Otherwise - if you have had these hearing aids for a long time - maybe go back and see if you can get modern ones.

But maybe your ok anyway as regard to your playing. My situation is related to how others hear me - not being able to pick up diction on modern films on the tele for example. Most of the others say my sound is ok - just a few say its toppy.

I am still experimenting. There are others on this site that have more experience. Hopefully we will hear more as time goes on.

Only if the person who says it’s similar has hearing good enough to make that assessment!

I am relatively new to all this, but realised after a recent test that I was missing a lot at the top and bottom. No jokes please!

Iain is spot on that your brain, having missed out on - in my case - highs and lows needs to adjust. Even my own voice sounded a bit weird at first.

My 'in ear monitors' (as I prefer to call them ) have Bluetooth so I am experimenting with listening to music from various sources. Over ear headphones seem OK but I take the aids out if using earbuds.

Signs of the times

Decided to go privately, for a variety of reasons.

The cost was pretty eye-watering, but the difference between the lower end and the top was such that I decided to go for the top of the range.

Following on from Dave's contribution, mine are Phonak, and they are virtually invisible even after a haircut!

They are also rechargeable, which saves replacing batteries.
