Newbie.

Postby Jim. C » Fri Jan 06, 2023 8:42 pm

Hi all, I've just joined the forum and thought I'd better say hello and break the ice. I've been lurking for a little while and found some interesting posts and useful info that has helped get the playing bug back. I had some serious injuries to my left hand that stopped me playing the Shadow music for about 40 yrs but now I'm back at it, struggling but it'll come. Anyway happy New Year to you all and wish you all the best.

Thanks for the welcome, I've been Shadows fan for as long as I can remember, I was a young lad when they were just lads. Bit of fanatic really, still got piles of vinyl's, tapes, and cd's which all get played frequently, there's no better music to be honest. I shall probably be on here mostly just reading and listening, you lot are way beyond my skills so will stay silent most of the time.

Don’t misunderstand our membership, Jim! Some of us are highly proficient Shads players, others are keen but limited and plenty more do not play at all. Likewise, some of us know a lot of Shadows history - and use of the advanced search function here will quickly turn it up - but many more do not. What unites us is our enthusiasm for the music, hence the site name. All are welcome and there is no pecking order :D

Hi Jim
Welcome to the forum.

Another area of Shadows expertise and experience will be found at one of the Shadows Clubs. These are listed in the Club area of the forum. Hopefully you will find one near to where you live.

Regards
Adrian

Cheers guys, Hi Ade, yes I looked at the list of local clubs but unfortunately I think Exeter is the closest to me, that's about 70 odd miles so a tad too far. I've the internet, not the social life I prefer but at least I get to read and listen to people with the same interest as me.

Hi Jim,
Similar story for me too. Head on with a tractor and trailer caused some nerve damage so no guitar playing for a long time. Latest is use it or lose it, so a Shadows special bought and strumming along!

Hi, Jim,

If you want to hear some scintillating conversation about The Shadows (and Cliff Richard), you might want to take a listen to Dave "Ghosty" Wills' monthly podcast "We Say Yeah".

You can find the first nineteen episodes at https://www.podbean.com/site/EpisodeDownload/PB12C7FBDAA9YM, with another (about Jet and Tony) to be added today.

100% recommended!

Welcome, Jim. I maintained only a casual interest in music after 1865. School, then work, and other interests intervened. 20 years ago, I decided to learn to play guitar and as much as I could about the Shadows. This forum and the forum that preceded it have been very helpful and instructive to me. You might find the earlier posts, some many years old, on gear, chasing That Sound, and things about the band, very interesting. I go back from time to time to reread.

Jim N, thank you for the link. I listened to three episodes (not in order) so far. It is also an Apple podcasts. I find it interesting listening to non-Shadows musicians talk about Shadows recordings. You should have been a guest, Jim N., as your detailed analysis of the Shadows' recordings on FB is very interesting. and your knowledge of their guitars and so on is immense. You should do your own podcasts on the Shadows, starting with the very early days. Antorias, and Selmer amps!

Best from Manila,

Andy

You are, as always, too kind, Andy.

In fact, I am the guest on the next podcast (number 21), due in about a month from now. It deals with the LP "Out Of The Shadows" and the 45 Dance On! / All Day.

The single was the third record I ever acquired and the LP was my first long-player.
