I always understood Hank played both the lead and rhythm tracks on that particular number as Bruce was absent at the time of recording.
That is correct. Hank plays both lead and rhythm guitar on the original studio version of "Theme For Young Lovers". Bruce was present earlier during the recording session, but walked out, so Hank had to play Bruce's parts too.

It seems ironic in the circumstances that Bruce didn't feature on the recording, since it was his composition!
