Hello from New Member in the states

Postby bigtikidude » 22 Mar 2010, 23:26

Hello all.

Just wanted to do a formal introduction after I spammed my event in 2 different areas of the forums.
But be advised that I am a Shadows fan, and will be hanging around.
My name is Jeff, and I am 38 years old, and live in Southern California.
I got into Surf Music, in the summer of 96, and of course, many surf bands cover a few Shadows songs.
Usually Apache, but a few do Rise and Fall, and or Peace Pipe, etc...
Its funny how some of the people my dads age here in the states think that Jorgen Ingman(sp?) did Apache 1st.
but being that I hadn't heard his version till just a few years ago.
I know that the Shadows were the 1st.
(well I did read in the Shadows box set-the early years) that there was one other guy that recorded it before them,
but it wasn't that good, and or the record people passed on it. Or something to that effect.
sorry its been awhile since I read that.
I still can't get over the fact that EMI/Capitol never thought the Shadows would do well over here,
and they never pushed(i.e. Promoted) the albums here.

Luckily in the late 90s and early 2000s I worked in a warehouse that specialize in bringing in Import cds to the US.
So I was able to pick up a few of theShadows reissues(stereo/mono) cds and some box sets.
and of course The Scamp records best of available here in the USA.
but my favorite was a Aussie best of with 30 or so tracks, Basically a comp of 2 different Best of LPs.

While I have to admit, that I am much more of a Fan of hard driving fast reverb saturated Surf music.
as I get a little older the, mellower surf, and the Shadows stuff is really appealing to me more.
Especially after a hard days work(Cleaning swimming pools now).I Come home, put on some Shads, put my feet up and have a drink. to relax. 8-)

also
I was/am a big Fan of the Huntington Cads, which were a Mix of Shads sound, mixed with some Exotica, and Surf.
Some of those members even did a Shadows tribute set, at a Guitar Geek Fest, a few years back.
If you haven't heard of them, you might want to track down their LP/cds"Go Exotic, & "Introducing the New Sound"
They are out of print, but you can find used copies on ebay.

I do own a Bass, and have been in a few surf bands over the years.
But am currently not in a band.

I look forward to reading much more of the site,
thanks,
Jeff(bigtikidude)

Hi, Jeff,

Welcome to this site - and thanks for the ads re the two surf festivals. I'm seriously considering going to the Italy one (I know the Livorno area and have friends there).

Do you happen to know Ivan Pongracic of the Space Cossacks?

Best wishes,

JN

Hey guys,
thanks for the welcome.

JN
Yes I know Ivan too,
I have seen his old band the Space Cossacks, and his newer band the Madeira for all of the shows that they have played here in So. Cal. in the past.
The Space Cossacks are doing are doing a reunion after not having played in 10 years.
and they are playing at the SG101 convention, and San Diego, and San Francisco the same weekend.
as well as some East Coast and Mid west shows this spring and summer.

Give my best to Ivan... I think he's a member here, but doesn't visit very often.

We met at ShadowMania in UK...

G'Day Jeff!

Good to see another 'colonial' (or 'former' colonial in your case!) in the mix to keep these Brits honest!

By the way, are you aware of the Aussie group 'The Atlantics'? They knocked 'The Boys' off the top of the hit parade in Sydney 'way back then' with their instrumental "Bombora' - surf music was big here in Oz and quite a few groups from that era including The Atlantics are still active and recording.

Hi all!

Jeff told me about this thread - thanks for the greetings, Jim and David! It's true I don't often check in  , but it's also true as Jeff said that I really am very busy. But I'll try to do better!

Bill, I know that Jeff is quite familiar with the Atlantics. They are pretty well-known among many surf music fans in the USA. Personally speaking, the Atlantics were almost as important to me as the Shadows. I discovered the Atlantics in '94 and just fell in love with them immediately - they seemed to be the perfect halfway point between that great echo sound and melodicism of the Shadows and the reverbed aggression and feel of American surf music, which as far as I'm concerned is an unbeatable mix - especially when combined with a huge dollop of off-the-charts creativity and fearless experimentation which their music often exhibited. I think they were simply genius. I've gone on to record covers of six of their songs (and one more to come soon). The Space Cossacks (we were active between '96 and '00) recorded Bombora, The Crusher, War of the Worlds and Shark Attack. With the Madeira (started in '04, still going strong) we recorded Express to Baghdad and SOS (Stomp on Stomp). We've also been playing their song Giant (not the Shadows song), and will record that one for our next album. Every album I've done (there have been four) has had an Atlantics cover, it's become a tradition and one which I fully intend to continue! Aussies should be VERY proud of this astounding band! (In addition, I've actually had a chance to chat over the phone with their bass player Bosco Bosanac and exchange emails with Jim Skiathitis and Peter Hood, and they were all really super guys, very friendly and down to earth.)

Ivan, Jeff,

Did you know that Bosco from The Atlantics has been on the road recently with his own 'Johnny Cash' Tribute Show with him as JC? Goes to show, despite other rumours Bass players can be multi-skilled!

Their second big hit in Australia way back when for those who aren't so familiar:
