The Hollies

Good evening all (well it is here in NZ),
I've just come in from a most enjoyable evening at a concert by the Hollies.
I last saw them live in 1973, so when my young ones gave me a ticket for Christmas, I didn't really know what to expect.
Well, I needn't have worried, the show was superb. Two hours of the hits we all remember along with a few new songs that
I hadn't heard. The band (with four new members) was tighter than I rememered from the 70's and Tony Hick's guitar (as well as sitar and banjo) playing
was the tops.
If you get a chance, take in a concert from one of the 60's super groups. They still rock!!

Yes Bobby was still drumming - and drumming up a storm at that!
Only two members from the early days, but the group was all class with some great musos.

Hi All

I see the Hollies petty well every year at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon.
They are superb Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliot have kept the Hollies alive for over 40 years I think it's 47 years now.

I shall go again this year. I never saw them with Alan Clarke it was Carl Wayne (of the Move) when I saw them first. Sadly Carl left us in August 2004 (due to cancer) and the new singer Peter Hawarth is very good too.

Go and see them. An event not to be missed.

Its interesting that there is a Cliff and the Shads connection even there as Peter Howarth has backed cliff many many times. Of course Ray Stiles, the bassist with the Hollies, was the Bass player with Mud for many many years. i used to jam with him in a music shop in Tooting. I also jammed with Tony Hicks in Selmers in the early sixties when we were both trying out a Zodiac amp. What a name dropper!!

That shop would have been Cascade Music. The Manager of that shop, Tony, is still active on the music scene. Regulars to the Surrey Shadows Club will know him as Tony Vee. He played at the last Club night and has a regular gig at The Points (I think that's the name of the place) in Walton.

Blimey! thats nice to know. i was a cop at Wandsworth in the late sixties/early seventies and I lived in Police flats just round the corner from the music shop,I often used to pop in there in uniform before i started work. Mud were often in there. i think they were a bit wary of the policeman sitting in the corner playing a guitar!! Les Grey (sadly deceased) used to love taking the p*ss out of me!

Ahh--2nd Feb well you must have been at the Wellington Show.
Just another connection with The Shads ----I was there operating the stage monitors on the tour as I have done for Cliff and the Shadows these past 32 years. The NZ tour has ended now and we are back in the UK pretending we are not jet lagged.Looking forward to another visit to the lovely NZ.

I saw them at Dudley Tech College Xmas dance 1964 with the original line up, a local group supported them 'The Strangers'(later known as Finders Keepers) who played a lot of Shads numbers, the Hollies where excellent but the Strangers where even better. Glenn Hughes and Mel Galley joined them a couple of years later
