BlueScreen problem - can you help?

Postby drakula63 » Mon Oct 05, 2009 10:14 pm

Been having some problems lately with this computer. As my knowledge of such things is not great, I'll explain the problem.

The problem seems to be that the machine will not go into and cannot be put into Sleep mode. Every time you try to do this, or, after a period of time, it tries to put itself into Sleep mode, It reboots itself and the BlueScreen appears. Then it starts up as per usual and stays like that until the screensaver kicks in and, eventually, it tries to go to Sleep. Then the whole thing starts again. So, unless it is physically switched off, it will keep going through this process of rebooting ad infinitum.

Have no idea how this has happened, but it could, of course, be virus or malicious software related.

Can anyone suggest what is the most likely cause and remedy for this annoying problem? Thanks.

As a less drastic possible solution, will the system allow you to right click the desktop, go into Powersaving (or whatever it's called on your version) and amend the settings so that you have no screensaver and in the section which deals with "going to sleep" you set it to "never"?

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to have a go at sorting it out later on, although the machine on which the problem is occuring is running Windows Vista not XP as the article refers to. Also, the machine currently has no anti-virus or anti-spyware software on it, so it could possibly be that a full check with one of these will locate the problem? I know that it's insane not to have some form of protection these days, but I'm afraid the machine in question is unprotected and this may be the problem. Apart from the problems with the Sleep mode, there seems to be no other problems I can see.
