"Buddy" - The Buddy Holly Story

"Buddy" - The Buddy Holly Story...has finally made its way over to the theatre district in my city. I heard an advertisement on the car radio yesterday. My immediate reaction was "Bruce!" because I remembered that he was a consultant on this production when it originated.

I doubt that I will see this play because I do not go to the theatre district in Philadelphia, but I am sure it is very good. I have put a link below to the participating theatre and to the cast listing, FYI. It might not even be the same cast as when it was in the UK; I don't know.

I have seen 'The Buddy Holly Story' four times over the years, including the original version at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London,
I still have the program for that one.

I don't recognize any of the names on your program.

Hi Donna,
I have seen this show several times over the years,but it has been running for,I believe over 20 years and the cast keeps changing in order to maintain the correct age on stage. A great show !

Philly is fairly well-known for the risk of crime (Baltimore has a similar reputation).

Hi, Ray, Jim, and everybody. Thanks for asking about Philly. Yes, JimN summed it up perfectly. The theatre district is just about walking distance (or certainly a very short taxi cab ride) from where all of my jobs have ever been, which is in Center City Philadelphia -- or "downtown" some people might call it. I have worked downtown for almost 30 years and never had a problem. But there have been stories in the news that just cause people like me to steer clear of there at night, better safe than sorry. The neighbourhood where we have several large sports stadiums and concert arenas is much safer.

The theatres and the area itself are beautiful...the problem relates more to where do you park you car, and how safe are you walking to/from your car and the theatre. In my opinion, it would be perfectly safe for tourists. I don't want to unfairly scare anyone away. As a tourist, you would be taking a taxi from your hotel to the theatre, and it would be absolutely safe.

But if that cast listing had shown that the part of Buddy Holly was being portrayed by Justin Daish, Colin Pryce-Jones, or a certain moderator -- then I'm there! I'll hire a limo, if I have to!

Buddy the musical is available on DVD from their website, I bought the DVD after seeing the show recently in Sheffield at the Lyceum. I was disappointed as thy have cut the cast by over a half since I saw it three times in the nineties. The show was still good - but one couldn't help comparing with the original with the full cast.

I'm really pleased that the DVD is the old cast from the nineties and I am able to watch it as I first remember it back then. £12.00 if I remember correctly.
