Zoom G5

Postby Graham » Sat Feb 20, 2021 10:09 am

A question for those Zoom users please. Would a Zoom G5 with the R Hall patches be adequate to get a reasonable selection of realistic Shadows tones?
Thanks for your advice.

Graham, I have a Zoom G5 with Ross Hall's patches.
Adequate?? It's a first class piece of kit and Ross Hall's
patches are first class.

You don't say if you are already in possession of a Zoom G5
or if you're thinking of getting one.
There's usually one or two on EBay or other sales sites.
Once in possession of one, contacting Ross is straight forward
enough. Downloading the patches and installing them on the
machine is simplicity itself. And the results are most rewarding.

Please don't confuse the Zoom G5 with the Zoom G5N.
Ross does sell the patches for the Zoom G5. He does not
sell patches for the Zoom G5N.

Further to this. I have had experience with other people's
patches for the Zoom G5. And in my opinion they are not
a patch ( pun intended ), on Ross Hall's patches.

Dave Robinson has kindly given you the link for Ross Hall Above.

Please note the above comments are my opinion based on actual
use of the Zoom G5 with Ross Hall's patches.

I don't know where you are in the country. If you find yourself in
the fortunate position of being able to travel / visit, you are most
welcome to come to my home near Lichfield Staffordshire and try
for yourself.

I also use the Hall and Collins machine. It too is a first class piece of
kit of which I'm very happy. You'd need to compare the cost of both
for yourself.

Cheers, Alan.

Thanks for your responses all.

Alan - I bought a G5 off eBay for £159 and am awaiting delivery. I have also downloaded the sharing software from the Zoom website so I anticipate getting the R Hall patches. I am also contemplating the H&C unit but that is expensive so, if the G5 produces the goods I may stick with that. I live in Poole, Dorset so a visit is probably out of the question. I also like the Spotniks and Duane Eddy so I’m hoping that I can find tones for them somewhere.

Teflon - I did look at Steve Reynolds (rip) video but couldn’t find the video which revealed which unit was which.

Steve never got 'round to making the follow up video, but in the comments he mentions that the order is the same in which he shows the various units, so Zoom is 1st, Hall & Collins 2nd etc. Pretty sure you'll be pleased with the Zoom G5 and Halls Echoes - cracking sound at a great price :)

Although you have already bought the Zoom G5, if considering another alternative, the the Blue Nebula does a good job, BarryG on this site lives not too far from you in Bournemouth There is a Blue Nebula Group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/246941463166823
