ipad/iphone interfaces

Postby Shadow Steve » Wed Sep 26, 2012 2:55 pm

Hi, has anyone out there tried the Ampitude and iRig guitar interface for the iphone or ipad?
They look interesting and appear easy to set up & modify but how do they compare with a "proper" echo machine thingy like a zoom 508 coded up for shadows sounds with the SLS data from Gorans wonderful website.

Garage band has the better options. it's a bit fiddly but it works.

Steve - I don't use any of the mobile apple interfaces - but recommend Amp 3 as a fantastic tool for recording guitar. All of my work is done using it exclusively. It is very versatile and authentic across a huge range of tones... I guess it is all subjective - but whilst GarageBand is an all in 1 recording solution - it is certainly not a specialist guitar modeler in the same expansive way that Amp 3 is. A different ball game in fact...

So if your question is about the interfaces - no idea... But if it is about the software then it is the real deal (except it is virtual!). If you go to the IK Multimedia site you can pick up Amp 3 free and give it a whirl. Either pc or Mac.

Many thanks for the replies, I am still a newbie to computing and music as many will know so sorry if my question has been asked before.
The hardware is just wires and circuits to me, guess whatever goes in will come out (eventually) sounding different.
Its the softwear and the ability to model a sound into something that resembles a Shadow style of music which I am interested in as I am the new owner of a Zoom 508, all coded up as per Gorans website, now my humble pluckings sound very different and even impresses my critical ears.
What I was trying to ask is can these new computer gizmos model the sound closer to the original or will I be wasting my time (and cash), we already own an Ipad (hers only used for scrabble and facetime with the grandkids) and my iphone (phone calls. backing tracks, camera, emails, backing tracks, internet, music , backing tracks, digital diary and of course playing my backing tracks on).
I will look up Amp 3 but I do not have any iRig type of interface yet so was wondering is it worth considering one for the future, if so are there any other that work better than the iRig and are they all compatable with each other?

Steve, I have been using amp and effects modelling apps for quite a while with my iPad. I use iRiffPort as an interface which, though expensive, is far superior to the interfaces that plug into the headphone socket, such as iRig (I have one of those, too, but only as a back-up). iRiffPort plugs into the Input/Output interface on the iPad and this connection gives much higher quality.

The sound quality, through both headphones and plugged into a PA, is excellent and I have actually done a few small gigs using only guitar, iPad and my Bose L1Compact sound system.

I've never been a 'That Sound' purist, but I get great tones for the music I play. I also use an app called One Track Mind, which plays my BTs in single-play mode, straight out of my playlists - no having to keep remembering to hit the pause button when a track ends!

Now, my iPad is not likely to replace my main rig in the immediate future, but I definitely recommend using your iPad in this way. There are new apps coming along all the time and they are getting better and better in the way they allow you to create tones. Go for it!

I too use that app for my backing tracks, good for the delayed start so I have time to get ready.
Many thanks for the info, something to work on when I am not killing music
